Sisters' Playtime by Bernard de Hoog
Bernard de Hoog was born in Amsterdam in 1866. Little
is known of his early life or formal artistic training. He became well-known for
his interior Genre paintings depicting family scenes particularly with mothers
and children. De Hoog would have been an admirer of the work of the Seventeenth
Century Dutch Masters, who were undergoing a revival in popularity in the
Nineteenth Century, in particular Jan Vermeer who focused on quiet interior
scenes of everyday family life and gave them poignancy by his attention to
detail and his vivid play of light and shadow. De Hoog painted during a difficult time in Europe’s history. The increasing industrialization and urbanization created a demand for sentimental and nostalgic scenes of past times. De Hoog’s warm family scenes are perfect examples of this genre of painting, they are fine caring works blessed with glowing subtlety. De Hoog’s paintings can be found in Museums throughout Europe. This signed Oil on Canvas of two children bathed in glowing morning light is an excellent example of de Hoog's work and is presented in its original gilt-wood frame. |

Jordaens Courting The Daughter of Adam Van
Noordt by Adrien Joseph Verhoeven-Ball
Adrien Joseph Verhoeven-Ball was born in Anvers in
Belgium in 1824 and died in the same town in 1882. He studied at the Academy of
Fine Art in Anvers and later resided as the Academies President for ten years.
As can be expected from a President of Fine Art, Verhoeven-Ball displays
excellent technique in this painting. The still life elements are beautifully
observed, while the townscape in the background is painted with great
sensitivity and understanding of evening light. The faces are also extremely
well painted displaying the full repertoire of his artistic
skills. Verhoeven-Ball chose this subject with good reason. Adam Van Noordt was a principle teacher at the Anvers Academy and Jacob Jordaens studied under him. Jordaens later went on to marry Van Noordt's daughter. Both artists were of great importance in their time. Adam Van Noordt was an accomplished teacher and taught Peter Paul Rubens for four years. Jordaens helped Rubens and painted numerous commissions for European Royalty. Although Van Noordt and Jordaens lived at the beginning of the Seventeenth Century, all three artists are linked to Anvers in Belgium. Verhoeven-Ball painted this work when he took the Presidency of the Academy, and it boasts the glorious artistic past of this Belgian town. The painting is signed and dated 1862 and has at some stage been sold by the Cooling Galleries, of New Bond Street, London. Verhoeven-Ball's work can be found in museums across the world from Montpelier, France, to Montreal, Canada. |

Highland Jennie by Alexander Johnston
Alexander Johnston was born in 1815 in Edinburgh,
Scotland, he went on to study painting in the city before travelling to London
in 1834 to further his education at the Royal Academy. Johnston realised a
successful career and exhibited at the Royal Academy's annual exhibitions for
fifty years, a magnificent accomplishment. During his career he became known for
depicting Scottish historical subjects. This painting is of Highland Jennie, a character from the Scottish poet Allan Ramsay's finest work - "The Gentle Shepherd", which tells of pastoral courtship and love in the Pentland hills. In this scene an amorous young gentleman, who is reading the Shakespeare play Romeo and Juliet and dreaming of love, sees Jennie a beautiful young maid coming to him in a dreamy haze. Many of Johnston's works were severe and austere and this signed and dated oil on canvas is unusual because it depicts a lighter happier scene. In this painting the artist demonstrated his skilful technical ability as well as his imaginative and expressive composition. Johnston's work can be found in The Tate Museum -London, also in Sheffield, Sunderland and Sydney - Australia. |

The Procession by Henri Jules Jean Geoffroy
Henri Jules Jean Geoffroy was a French artist who was
reputed for his ability to capture the innocence and charm of young children,
often depicted within more somber settings. This enchanting scene is a perfect
example of his work, his use of atmospheric light to achieve perspective in the
candlelit procession provides a beautiful demonstration of his abilities as a
painter.
Henri Jules Jean Geoffroy was born in 1853 and began his artistic career as a pupil of Levasseur. He then made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1874 (the annual exhibition for members of the French Royal Academy). In 1883 he went on to become a member of the Society of French Artists and throughout his lifetime won many awards including the coveted Gold Medal at the Exposition Universalle in 1900. Geoffroy's artistic skills were publicly recognised by France's cultural elite when he was made a Knight of the Legion d'honneur - France's greatest acknowledgement that can be bestowed within a lifetime. Today Geoffroy's work is held within the collections of many of the worlds most prominent museums including the Louvre and the Musee d'Orsay in Paris and also the prestigious Hermitage in St. Petersburg, Russia. Geoffroy died in Paris in 1924. This scene is of a procession after the Fête Dieu (Festival/Celebration of God) possibly at the Salle des Pauvres (Hall of the Poor) which forms part of the Hôpital de Beaune. Beaune is a beautiful medieval town which is located in the East of France, just North of Lyon. The Hôpital de Beaune was formed in the 15th Century to provide refuge and care for the destitute, from the town and surrounding countryside, after the 100 Year War. As an interesting historical note, many miracles have been proclaimed within the Hôpital de Beaune over the centuries. The painting is signed and dated 1906 in the lower right hand corner and is displayed in its original magnificent gilt-wood frame. The antique frame is profusely decorated throughout in classical acanthus leaves and foliate carving. |

'The Duet' is a well executed oil on panel and is an
