The Kitchen Helpers
by Bernard Pothast

In his youth Bernard was encouraged to visit his father’s workshop where he learnt all the technical points of production. After he had finished school his father sent him to study the work of the Dutch Masters in museums and galleries. The characters in Pothast’s paintings are imbued with virtue and a gentle strength. Bernard Pothast's poignant paintings of peasant life gained popularity during his lifetime and remain popular today. In this particular painting the children are those of the artist himself whilst the mother is the model he used most frequently. This Oil on Canvas painting in its original carved giltwood frame is a particularly fine example of Pothast's favorite subject - a peasant mother surrounded by her children. The entire vignette has a gentle quality and sentimentality due to the gently filtered light coming through the window. The overall effect of the painting is soft and reinforces the ideals of a mother's love as eternal, even when the most mundane of daily tasks are depicted.

The Sisters
by James Collinson
James Collinson was born in 1825 and by 1845 had begun formal artistic training at the Royal Academy School. Along with William Holman Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Collinson felt stifled by the rigid conventions that surrounded a classical artistic education. In 1848 along with the artist John Everett Millais the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was formed. The name Pre-Raphaelite was chosen to express the groups admiration for early Italian art. Their aim was to free themselves of the rigid classical structures of the Academy and paint more inspired subjects true to nature. There were seven original members (the other three being a sculptor and two poets) and many followers who were to shape the conventions of painting. To start with the Brotherhood were pilloried by critics but they were eventually welcomed into the establishment and their influence on Nineteenth Century British art cannot be under-estimated. Along with Holman Hunt, James Collinson was intensely religious and wanted his art to have a beneficial moral influence on the public. In 1851 he resigned from the Brotherhood so he could take up holy orders at Stonyhurst Monastery breaking off his engagement with Christina Rossetti as he left. However in 1854 Collinson returned to painting, concentrating on happy Genre scenes he never lost his ability to accurately portray any subject. His work can now be found in Museums throughout the world including The Tate in London and the National Gallery of Canada. This signed Oil on Canvas in its original Gilt-wood frame retains the detailed brushwork Collinson was known for and also the luminous quality that was the hallmark of Pre-Raphaelite artwork.

The Quiet Hour
by Fernand Toussaint
Fernand Toussaint was a Belgian artist born in Brussels in 1873. A celebrated painter of Still Life and figurative subjects including Portraits, Toussaint's highly individualistic sense of colour separated him from his fellow artists from an early age. At the tender age of fifteen, he entered the Academy of Fine Arts in his hometown where he studied under Jean Portaels, an extremely demanding and innovative instructor who placed a strong emphasis on the art of drawing, thus producing students of remarkably accomplished ability. Toussaint quickly became Portael’s star pupil by exhibiting a rare talent for painting in a variety of subjects and styles.

In 1891, Toussaint left for Paris where he met the painter Alfred Stevens. At this time, Stevens was at the height of his career and it was through his encouragement that Toussaint began to develop the individualistic style for which he would become known, an elegant style grounded in first-rate drawing ability which combined elements of French Modernism with a lively Impressionistic palette. It was also during this period that Toussaint began to paint his beautiful studies of women and many critics and admirers of his time described Toussaint as “Le maitre incontesté de la grâce et du charme de la femme” (The uncontested master of the grace and charm of the woman). He exhibited widely, at most of the major venues in Belgium and at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris, where he received a medal in 1901 and a gold medal in 1929 prompting a featured spread in the popular Parisian magazine, "L'Illustration" that same year. Toussaint was also a known member of the famed Sillon Group for which he produced popular posters of the day.

In this Oil on Canvas, signed in the lower left, Toussaint is using all his remarkable skill and technique in capturing an elegant lady in a thoughtful moment in time. The palette is rich and vibrant, and the lace and folds of the Lady’s white dress is highlighted and dappled by the morning light from the window. Toussaint was an admirer of the female form and this painting displays the care he took in his painting, endearing the viewer to his subject.
