Portrait of Anne Ashe Oil on canvas Studio of Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680)
Peter Lely was born in Westphalia and his father, an infantry captain, changed
the family name from de Van der Faes to Lely. In 1637, Peter accompanied William
II of Orange to England and to the London court of Charles 1st in 1641 where he
succeeded the dead Van Dyck in the King's favour. He painted many of the senior
courtiers. In 1660 Charles II gave him the title of "painter at court" and a

Oil on canvas Attributed to Thomas Bardwell (1704-1767) Thomas Bardwell,
British portrait painter and copyist. He is said to have lived from 1704 to
1767. According to some sources he died in 1780. It is titled "Portrait of a
Lady", in which the subject is seated three-quarter-length, in a blue dress
trimmed with lace and blue ribbons, with a white lace collar by an urn on a
terrace. Bardwell's portrait of the Countess of Pomfret and that of her husband
