W. Jason Situ

W. Jason Situ was born in Guangdong, China, where he began painting in high school. When the school closed due to the Cultural Revolution, Situ studied informally with friends and painted plein air with local artists. After the turbulent movement, he spent two years studying at the Guangzhou Fine Arts Institute, one of China’s most prestigious and competitive professional art academies. Eventually he became an art instructor at his former high school. Over the course of a ten-year career as an art instructor, his works were exhibited in various art museums and art venues throughout China.

Situ moved to the United States with his family in 1989 and has since become a devoted plein air artist, winning numerous awards. He was presented with a double award from the Tucson Plein Air 2000 event and has received special acknowledgements from the La Quinta and Laguna Beach Plein Air painting competitions. Situ was listed as a “Select Artist to Watch” in the February 2000 issue of Southwest Art Magazine. Additionally, he participated in the 1999-2000 exhibition “On Location in Malibu: Painting by the California Art Club” held at the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art at Pepperdine University in Malibu and at the Phippen Museum in Prescott, Arizona.

In 2001, Situ’s paintings began to earn significant recognition. He received the “Best of Light Award” at Tucson Plein Air Competition; “Honorable Mention” at the Carmel Plein Air Competition; the “Art and Antiques Award” at the Laguna Beach Plein Air Invitational; placement in the “Top 100 Artists” at the Arts for the Parks Exhibition in Jackson, Wyoming; “Second Place” at the Sights of Santa Ana Competition; and the prestigious “American National Award of Excellence” at the Oil Painters of America Tenth Annual Juried Show in Palm Desert. His most recent awards were was “Best in Show” at La Quinta Plein Air 2002; “Third Place” at the CAC Outdoor Painting Festival and Juried Competition, California; “Merit Award” at the First Annual San Luis Obispo Art Festival, California; “Award of Merit” at the Estes Park Plein Air 2002, Colorado; and “Region III Winner – Mini 50” at Arts for the Parks, Wyoming.

W. Jason Situ is a Signature Member of the following associations: Oil Painters of America, Laguna Beach Plein Air Painters Association, and the California Art Club.
