Barry Yang

Barry Yang was born in China and began to paint at the early age of six. His interest in art led to an opportunity to study with a well-established artist in the area, before eventually being accepted to the local college of fine art. Barry then found employment with the state owned newspaper as the Editor for Art and Design.

Barry has traveled throughout China and has visited much of Europe and the United States. Because he prefers the simplicity of rural communities to the loud noises of city life, Barry frequents small villages in the countryside. Many of his paintings are from his travels to rural Tibet.

Barry’s passion is painting the children in these villages to capture their natural beauty and innocence. In order to better understand his painting subjects, Barry and his wife will stay in the village where they can have daily contact and build relationships with the locals. After several days the children will befriend them, allowing them to draw portraits and take photos.

His paintings have been exhibited in Shanghai and throughout China numerous times. In 1980 he won the prize for “Excellent Creation” from the Shanghai Art Institute.

Art collectors, mainly from the United States and Japan, have purchased his oil and watercolor paintings since 1985. In 1989 he immigrated to Canada where he currently lives.

Most recently, two of Barry’s paintings were selected for the Salon International 2007 Exhibit, an international juried exhibition of the International Museum of Contemporary Masters of Fine Art. Barry’s work was recognized with a Jurors’ Top 50 award ribbon.
