"When asked about my work, I am happy to share my thought process and my goal in creating each work of art. My first task is to apply the paint to the canvas in an elegant , thoughtful and expressive manner which, hopefully, will allow the viewer to see and feel some of the passion and joy that Ie experienced in the process of making a painting. I love working with oils, as they allow me to create beautiful, interesting, and varied surface texture - with thick, luscious loose brushstrokes juxtaposed against thinner and more tightly rendered areas of the painting. Capturing the elusive look and feeling of rich warm sunlight illuminating my subjects is nearly always an import!ant part of creating each of my paintings. The light is such an integral element in capturing mood and celebrating the subtleties in each subject , that I am constantly working on improving my ability to incorporate it beautifully into each and every piece that I do. Ie also come to the conclusion that there must be something elow the surface?and more substantial than simply a well crafted and pretty painting that elevates it, and helps to transform it into a lasting and continually satisfying work of art. For me - that something is to capture on canvas those rare and magical moments in life that touch a person soul. - When you catch a glimpse of your lover, and your breath is taken away.My goal is to leave a legacy of beauty to those who may own or view my work. Sometimes, striving for that level of excellence demands everything that I have to give. My passion, intellect, and soul. And, I love the challenge." |
Scott Mattlin is an artist with a deep and passionate appreciation for beauty in the natural world and within the human spirit. This enthusiastic and sensitive joy is reflected brilliantly in his artwork. His work is executed in a vibrant, impressionistic style, which - while still retaining its representational roots, incorporates abstract elements, resulting in a uniquely contemporary union. Mattlin immortalizes the private world to which he bears witness. Whether it be an intimate exchange captured between mother and child, a glimpse into the solitary reverie of a ballet dancer, or a serene moment in the world of the timeless nude - Scott choice of subject matter, his masterful ability for extemporaneous composition, and his brilliant talent for the juxtaposition of light and shadow ?all evoke a powerful old world feel, yet with an irresistible modern edge.
As a young man, Scott traveled throughout North America trying his hand at a dizzying number of careers and trades. Nothing truly resonated however, until his childhood passion for painting was re-kindled. At nearly 30 years of age, Scott art education began in Southern California. While preparing to enter the Art Center School of Design in Pasadena, California, he developed a friendly relationship with a group of successful local artists who agreed to mentor him; among them, internationally respected wildlife artist Joe Garcia. Scott abandoned his plans for formal education and embarked on an intensive four-year period of study and painting that was to change his life forever.
Since that time, Scott dedication to creating beautiful and expressive paintings has manifested into the development of a broad range of enthusiastic collectors, exhibitions, and awards. Scott work has been featured in Southwest Art Magazine, including ?u>Best of the West,?in the April 2004 issue. He has appeared in a wide variety of art and instructional publications. As an associate member of the Oil Painters of America, he has been juried into regional and national OPA events. He was selected to exhibit in the prestigious Colorado Governor Invitational Art Show in 2004 and 2005. As a veteran art instructor, he has taught master watercolor workshops nationwide at the invitation of the Grumbacher Company, as well as appearing as a keynote speaker at their national conferences.
Scott work hangs in private and corporative collections - both at home and abroad. During his years of representation in Alaska, from 1992 to 1999, Scott work was featured in seven, one-man shows, and he was named the official painter of the Iditarod Sled Dog Race for five consecutive years. The governor of Alaska gifted his rendering of Mount Denali, painted in 1999, to the city of New York, where it is hangs in permanent display in Fire Station Number one ? in commemoration to the firefighters who gave their lives on September 11, 2001.
The unforgettable oils of Scott Mattlin are represented nationwide ?in galleries from West Palm Beach to Anchorage, Alaska, from Texas to New Mexico and in New England at The Churchill Gallery, in Newburyport, Massachusetts.
