An art and architecture student at the George School in Pennsylvania and a fine art graduate of Skidmore College, Elizabeth Wadleigh Leary has been a designer, draftsman and model maker with architects in New York City and with the Architects Collaborative under Walter Gropius in Cambridge. She was also a technical illustrator for the Harvard College Observatory and specialized in work for the Orbiting Solar Observatory Project.

Elizabeth has been described as a classical realist, that is, an artist who perceives a certain mathematical clarity in the chaos of the world. Her palette is severely reductive. Her work places great emphasis on precise drawing over which color is applied in many layers of monochromatic washes. This austerity and clarity of vision lend an aura of haiku poetry to her still life and architectural paintings. Her sensitive and sophisticated use of form, content, and visual language in a meaningful, yet minimalist framework, explores the depth and mystery of our everyday world.

Elizabeth Leary is definitely an American painter. She finds inspiration in the farms of New England, the lighthouses and dories found along the coast and the old fishermens?cottages on the islands - each interpreted within the vicissitudes of New England notorious weather - its swiftly changing light, its fickle seasonal shifts and notoriously harsh winters. A fascination with things architectural - from the bleached shells discovered along the beachs to elegant New England barns - creates a visual legacy both complex and detached. Her work reflects a poetic romanticism with its spiritual quality of luminescence. However, her disciplined and virtuoso technique delivers both force and drama to her compositions.

Elizabeth documents the rich range of our architectural past; the isolated marsh cottage, a pristine Federal residence, he Patriot,? a humble Menemsha storefront. Her impeccable still life work elevates her subjects to a near sacred status; the unexpectedly eloquent juxtaposition of snail shell to stone, freshly picked pears - almost roguish in character - with their unruly stems, an elegant blue jay feather - each executed with a fineness of hand that is in itself, awe-inspiring. These works reveal Elizabeth on-going fascination and reverence with the order and grace of our natural world.

A recipient of the coveted Rob Sagendorph Prize by the Copley Society in 1992, Elizabeth paintings are exhibited in a number of major galleries and are represented in collections, both private and corporate, at home and abroad. Selected publications include The Artist Magazine, September 1998, Yankee Magazine, February, 1993 and The Boston Globe, November 1990. She has participated in over thirty one-person shows nationwide, since 1965.

The Churchill Gallery has had the privilege of representing Elizabeth extraordinary work for almost twenty years, and has highlighted her collections in sixteen consecutive annual shows.
