Beverly McIver unflinchingly examines the meaning of “otherness” and its many manifestations, from racial identities to family roles, in works of painterly bravura and ｅxpressionist force. Writing in the catalogue of McIver’s recent exhibition at the Weatherspoon Art Museum, Raphael Rubinstein situates her work in the “great modern tradition of painters” whose subjects are autobiographical, and he points to the strength of emotion that makes McIver’s work stand out among the contemporary art we are used to.

McIver is the recipient of numerous grants and awards, including the Louis Comfort Tiffany Award, the Guggenheim Fellowship, and the Anonymous Was a Woman grant. In 2004 her work was the subject of two important museum shows, at the 40 Acres Art Gallery of St. Hope Academy in Sacramento, California, and the Weatherspoon Art Museum in Greensboro, North Carolina. Her next show at Kent is scheduled for the fall of 2005 and will be accompanied by a publication entitled Renee, currently in preparation by Irving Sandler.
