Elizabeth Locke
Growing up in a family of artists, Elizabeth was encouraged to draw and paint from an early age, exploring and experimenting in various mediums along the way. While still in high school, she was invited to attend art classes on a scholarship to Chounard Fine Art School in Los Angeles. She then traveled abroad to study at Sir John Cass College of Art and Heatherley School of Art in London. Heatherley was a small traditional art guild her mother had attended.
Returning to the States, she continued her studies at the Arts Students League in New York City and apprenticed with Larry Gluck where she says she learned the technical side of visual communication. Since then, she has studied with other renowned artists such as Quang Ho, Ron Hicks, Kim English, Michael Lynch, and Helen Van Wyk, to name a few.
Elizabeth has been the owner and operator of her own art school in Austin, Texas since 1985. "There is a visual language that must be mastered in order to draw and paint well", says Elizabeth. "First you need a way to interpret the physical universe into the elements of line, tone, color and texture. Then the creative intuitive 'feeling' side of ourselves has a means through which to express itself in its own uniquely beautiful way."
Her time now is divided between teaching and painting, spending her summers abroad painting the French countryside, and her winters in West Texas painting the mountains and desert. The resultant work has attracted the attention of collectors across the nation. "There is no substitute for painting directly from life", she says. "Magical things can happen when we are in direct relationship with Nature like that. Responding to real light and real colors in "real time" is an experience of, not only witnessing Nature, but also participating in the glory of it all!"
Elizabeth was featured in the March 2001 edition of "Southwest Art" magazine as one of the "Artists to Watch".
Lifetime Television Network featured Elizabeth and her work in a broadcasting called "Real Woman". This was aired in September of 2001.
