        중국인 화가 루오통의 작품들은 특별히 인물의 표정이 살아있다. 티벳사람들을 많이 그린 그의 작품들을 보면 나라의 영토를 잃고 중국과 대항하면서 살아가는 티벳사람들이 일제탄압기를 거쳤던 한국의 정서를 많이 자극하는 면이 있다.                     Along the River

Tong Luo • Oil                  현대문명과 동떨어져서 그들의 문화로 부터 벗어날 수 없는 운명을 타고난 티벳 딸들은 최첨단을 걷고 있는 현대 문명을 알고나 있는 걸까....아들로 태어나면 제대로 먹고 교육 받는 혜택을 누리기 위해 승려의 길을 택한다는 티벳사람들.  아들들은 대부분 인도나 네팔의 절로 유학가서 미국으로 정치적 망명 길을 택한다.               Cooking Time (2008)
Tong Luo • Oil                      미국에 온 티벳 승려들은 나이가 40이 되어도 미국인 가정에 양자로 채택되면 미국국적을 얻기가 쉽기 때문에 그 길을 택하고 대학에서 공부하는 길을 많이 택한다.  내가 살고 있는 이곳 이타카에도 티벳 절이 커다랗게 신축되었다.  3년이나 4년에 한번씩 달라이 라마가 코넬대 강연을 위해 들르면 그 날은 티벳인들의 축제날이고 이곳 미국인들도 같이 들뜬다.  달라이라마의 강연은 한 달전에 전부 매진된다.  그는 미국인에게 참 친숙한 인상이다.               Heritage
Tong Luo • Oil                  미신도 많고, 독특한 불교문화로 유명한 티벳에서 태어나고 자란다는 것은 어찌보면 불행하기도 하고 그 속에서 파묻혀 살다가 문명의 이기를 맛보지 못하고 순수하게 살다 죽는 인생을 생각하면 행복인지도 모른다는 생각이 들기도 한다.         Morning in Tibet

            하지만 너무나 많은 관광객이 티벳을 드나들면서 문명의 소식을 전해주고, 선교를 통해서 이 순수한 사람들에게 기독교가 전파되고 있는 요즘의 티벳인들은 마음속이 심란할 것 같다.  나라는 아직도 중국에 종속되어 있고 물밀듯 문명의 소식은 덮치고....순수한 티벳의 아이들의 동심은 예전과는 다른 색깔로 물들어 가고 있겠지...                   Before Storm

Luo Tong

Born in Huai Yang County of Henan Province in 1969, Tong Luo enrolled in the Oil Painting Department of the Guanzhou Academy of Fine Arts, China, in 1990. He graduated with a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts in 1994, and eventually went on to instruct at the Guanzhou Academy. An extremely gifted young artist, Tong was one of only thirty students selected from across China in 1999 to be allowed to pursue post-graduate studies in Fine Art at the Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing.

Tong’s work is a compelling combination of light and contrast, specializing in landscapes and figurative work that depict people moving along in their daily rhythms. His attention to detail is meticulous and his portrayal of these life situations is accomplished with sensitivity and compassion. “I constantly pursue the essence of the Western and Oriental artistic path. Through the unique image and the subject that I select, the variation of texture and colors, I strive to create a spiritual nourishment, so as to stimulate and sharpen the artistic intuition among us.”

During his career, Tong was the recipient for several awards in China including the Luo Zhong Li Scholar Prize in 1998 and the Mei Yuan Cup Award for painting in 2000. He has also won numerous awards and been featured in select Asian art publications.
