Ria DeWit

 

Ria DeWit was born and educated in the Netherlands, where she was exposed to art by all of the great European masters from a very young age.  Mostly self-taught, Ms. DeWitt’s classical style of painting has been heavily influenced by 16^th and 17^th century painters, particularly the Dutch master of detail, Willem Kalf. 

 

After moving to the United States, Ms. DeWit lived and painted all over the country before settling in Leesburg, Virginia.  Over the years, having experimented with a wide variety of mediums, she came to love working in oil and now concentrates on painting still lifes in oil.

 

Ms. DeWit’s earlier work focused on portraying traditional still life subjects in a classical, “Old Dutch” style.  While still inspired by the classics, her work has now evolved into contemporary still life paintings which emphasize vibrant color, intriguing objects in a combination of different shapes, and exotic fabrics with great textures.

 

Her still lifes are very personal pieces, which demonstrate Ms. DeWit’s eye for detail and her masterful ability to portray objects from all over her home which can include glass, copper, Old Dutch pewter, an Asian pot or a Moroccan bowl, even an eyelet tablecloth.

 

Having taught at the Loudoun Academy of the Arts, Ms. DeWit now concentrates on her painting and teaches private students in her studio.

 

Ms. DeWitt joined Trowbridge-Lewis Galleries in December of 2005, immediately becoming one of the gallery’s most popular artists.
