Henry Asencio was born in 1972 and raised in Santa Maria, California. He excelled in art throughout his childhood and set a goal at age 11 to become a world-class artist. He was accepted into the prestigious San Francisco Academy of Art on scholarship. In 1998 Asencio was invited to exhibit at the Amsterdam Art Competition. He is the first American artist to receive both Gold and Silver metals in self portrait and figurative study.

    Asencio is inspired by British artist Lucien Freud for figurative abstract art. Wilhen de Kooning for creating different styles in brushstrokes, and Gustav Klimt for decorative art without the prostitution of artistic ｅxpression!. Asencio states that “drawing is the essential backbone of every great painting”. Therefore every painting begins with a drawing/study. The artist uses the timeless medium of oil on board. His style is unique and painterly. Loose and edgy. The sculptural brushstrokes are achieved by unorthodox methods of using both ends of the brush, forks, knives, rakes or whatever happens to be in reach.  

Every Asencio piece has the underlying theme that the figure is still, contemplative, in solitude, at rest…

Yet the background is filled with strong, masculine, chaotic brushstrokes. The philosophy behind

the work is the human need to find a place of solace in the midst of a chaotic world.
