Although born in the United States in California, Marko moved with his family at the age of ten to his parents' native home Croatia, then part of Yugoslavia. During his early years he lived on several different islands off the coast of the Adriatic Sea. With the encouragement of his father, Miro, who was a watercolor artist, and inspired by the beauty of the sea and coastline, Marko began sketching scenes of his childhood. It was this intense love of the sea that persuaded Marko to enroll in a school of navigation. From there he spent several years working in a shipyard and as a commercial diver. "Being underwater in absolute silence helped me clear my thinking, and I finally realized I should be doing something better with my life". That "something better" was returning to the love of art. Every year, Marko spends time in Croatia where he gathers material for his work by studying the unusual scenery of the Adriatic Coast.
