 G.  Harvey grew up in the Texas Hill Country listening to his father relate stories of his young grandfather's cattle days.  He was trail boss at eighteen years of age, of a trail drive from Texas up the Chisholm Trail to Kansas.  During the earlier part of his career, Harvey drew inspiration from that collective memory for paintings that would eventually earn him the reputation as one of America’s most recognized and successful artists.

In 1965 he won the prestigious New Masters Award from the American Artist Professional League's Grand National Exhibition in New York.  Since then his work has been exhibited at the Prix de West, The Gilcrease Museum, Texas Panhandle Plains Museum and a series of shows in Washington, D.C. in 1991.  The first show featured his paintings of the Civil War era at the National Archives.  The second exhibition at the Treasury Department depicted historical buildings and sites of our nation's Capitol.  This culminated in a spectacular one man show of 35 major works at the Smithsonian Institute, as part of their exhibition of "Celebration of the Horse".  This exhibit ran for three months.  one of his paintings was featured on the cover of the Smithsonian's 150th Anniversary Commemorative book.
