Annette Hodges

Picturesque villages, quaint cobblestone streets, farmers laboring in a field, or a merchant leading his burros-- these and other charming scenes find their way to the canvases of Annette Hodges. Intrigued by the simple lifestyle and character of Mexico, Annette brings its color and charm to life in her irresistible paintings. Her method of painting ordinary people and everyday occurrences makes one feel as if they’ve been transported back on an intriguing journey to a more simple time and place.

Since the early 1980s, Annette and her husband have made annual treks to Mexico so that Annette can research the daily lives of the Mexican people. Spending two to three months at a time there gives Annette great insight into Mexico’s customs and cultures. With a familiarity and love for her subject, she easily expresses with paint what moves her.

Although most of her works are scenes from Mexico, Annette is equally at ease portraying other subject matter. A native of Texas, she often paints the sparkling streams of the Hill Country. Her landscapes are likewise portrayals of the color and mood of the land so dear to her. With remarkable facility she captures the alluring beauty of amber skies reflected in the waters of a rippling stream, or the tranquillity of a quiet pasture under the protective shade of a majestic oak.

Whatever she is painting, Annette is particularly interested in the way light and shadow play off the surface of her subjects, their color relationships, and the varied textures and forms. Despite paying meticulous attention to detail in her works, Annette does not let the minutiae get in the way of achieving the mood she is trying to convey.

Although she is basically self-taught, Hodges has taken advantage of every opportunity to learn from other artists. She has participated in numerous workshops, and continues to immerse herself in study through art books and visiting museums and galleries. As she learns with each new painting, she claims her canvas to be her "best and most demanding teacher."

Despite having received numerous awards in juried competitions, Annette finds her greatest fulfillment when her art has touched a person’s soul. She states that a collector makes the "ultimate judgment and gives me the greatest reward for my efforts." She continues, "I want my collectors to enjoy the painting and to appreciate what I saw and how I interpreted what I was seeing." Endowed with the privilege of viewing the world with an artist’s eyes, she finds joy in that which goes unnoticed by many. And she finds satisfaction in sharing this wonderment and passion with those who view her work.
